Stephen Clyde

President and Board Member

Stephen W. Clyde is an associate professor in the Computer Science Department at Utah State University, specializing in software engineering, object-oriented models and methods, and distributed systems. His current research interests include development processes for web-based applications, object-oriented conceptual models, and architectural design patterns for distributed systems. Stephen has managed numerous software projects in both commercial and academic settings. He has published papers on a variety of topics including: formal software models, object-oriented design methods, curriculum design for computer science, knowledge-based code generation, and expert systems. He has also made many presentations at conferences, workshops, and seminars on his research and development activities. Stephen has taught courses in software engineering, object-oriented software development, conceptual models, operating system design, data and computer communications, database systems, computer security, programming environments, and software testing.

He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, in April 1993. Before receiving his degree at BYU, Stephen worked in the software industry for 14 years in a variety of jobs ranging from software developer to chief scientist. During this time, some of his accomplishments included co-founding a successful software company, developing dozens of commercial software systems, and inventing a knowledge-based code generator that automatically produces source code from high-level designs.

Angel Crane

Vice President

Angel is Vice President of Operations at Multimedia Data Services Corporation. She also serves as database designer, website content manager, and applications developer. Angel joined MDSC in 1996 as an Internet applications developer, and her experience includes database design, compiler implementation, expert-systems development, systems administration, user interface design and research in new software technologies. Angel’s primary projects at present are NSBO, TEDI, UCCP, and OHV. Her interests include user interface and database design, and .NET applications development. Outside MDSC, she is an avid geocacher, and also enjoys hiking, biking, gardening and traveling, especially if she’s never been there before. She received a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Brigham Young University in 1985 and a master’s degree in Computer Science from Utah State University in 1998.

Kenneth Bailey

Vice President

Kenneth Bailey began working with MDSC in the fall of 2000. He is currently a Vice President at MDSC and assists in the daily operations of the company. His interests include all aspects software development, including analysis, design, implementation, testing, and deployment. His greatest enjoyment comes from working with clients and team members to provide effective software solutions. He received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and followed with a master’s degree from Utah State University in 2003. In 2011, he completed his MBA from the Jon M Huntsman School of Business.

Brian Davis

Software Engineer

Brian began working as a software engineer for MDSC in December of 2006. His programming interests include database design and administration, .NET desktop application development, website development and programming, graphical user interface design, and computer programming theory. He enjoys creating and analyzing requirements documents to design and implement software solutions that meet client’s business needs. Brian is over support and maintenance for the DRAMA program, which he helped design and create for the Utah Department of Health. He also helped design and create the web-based component of the DMS system, and is working on additional functionality for the DMS desktop application. Brian received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Utah State University in 2008, with an emphasis in information systems. Outside of software development, he enjoys fly-fishing, shooting sports, gardening, yard-work and home improvement projects, and spending time with his wife.

Pete Deffendol

Software Engineer and System Administrator

Pete primarily works as a web application developer specializing in open-source solutions. He also serves as the system and network administrator for MDSC’s servers and computer equipment. His development interests includes web-based software development, database administration, and test-driven development. He is an avid supporter of Linux, free software, and web standards. When not strapped to his coding chair, he enjoys mountain biking, baking bread, and cooking Thai food. Pete received a BS degree in Computer Science from Utah State University in 1998.

Lan Hu

Software Engineer

Lan Hu joined MDSC in May 2007. Currently, she is working as a software engineer and technique team leader of CHARM (Child Health Advanced Records Management) project, which is an integrated system that provide better information sharing among independent child health care providers. As a developer, Lan focuses on the record matching technology (matcher) for the integrated database and development of few other services; as a team leader, she coordinates, manages and schedules activities for team members. She received her Master Degree in Computer Science from Utah State University in 2007.

Schuyler Manchester

Software Engineer

Schuyler began working for MDSC in Fall of 2009. His technical interests include database development, programming languages, graphical user interface development, and object-oriented software development, and combinatorial testing. His interests outside of software development include soccer, skydiving, yoga, running, and cooking. He is currently working on his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with an emphasis in science.

Dean Mathias

Software Engineer

Dean began working with the MDSC team in February of 2011. His past experience has primarily involved development of solutions for Microsoft platforms, with a specific focus on Environmental Engineering applications. He has also worked as a Lecturer of Computer Science at Utah State University, teaching a variety of courses including, C++, Java, C#, Operating Systems, Computer Graphics and Game Development. Dean is currently pursing a Ph.D. of Computer Science, researching the topic of, “Peer-to-Peer Simulation of Massive Virtual Environments.”, expecting to finish in May of 2012.

Xiangbin (Sean) Qiu

Software Engineer

Xiangbin (Sean) Qiu joined MDSC in July 2010. He recently completed a Master of Science in Computer Science from Utah State University. He previously completed a Bachelor of Arts in Scientific English and Computer Science from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Beijing. Sean’s interests include OO design, distributed systems, and agile project management. He has a strong background in Java and C# development and is currently part of the CHARM and DMS development teams at MDSC.

Brian Smith

Software Engineer

Brian Smith joined the MDSC team in the Fall of 2008, shortly after receiving his Masters Degree in Computer Science from Utah State University. As part of his Masters, he developed the Vitruvian Framework which includes an architecture aimed at reducing the complexity of developing distributed systems. His previous experience includes computer graphics, real-time systems, GIS tools, and framework development. His time is currently split between projects for the Utah Department of Health and further development of the Vitruvian Framework. He has lots of interests, but really just enjoys a good problem to solve.

Michael Spackman

Software Engineer

Michael Spackman started working as a software engineer for Multimedia Data Services Corporation in 2005. He is currently working on the National Scenic Byways Online project maintaining and enhancing features, generating maps and maintaining GIS data. He leads the cartographic team for National Scenic Byways Online. He also maintains BTOTS (Baby and Toddler Online Tracking System), a desktop application for tracking services provided for children with physical and learning needs 0-3 years old for the State of Utah. His interests include graphic design, user interface design and issues, and all software engineering concepts. Michael is also actively studying Shen Wuan Kung Fu. He loves spending time with his wife and two children. Michael graduated with his BS degree in Computer Science from Utah State University in 2005.

Gary Anderson

Secretary and Treasurer
Gary N. Anderson was born in Logan and raised in Cornish and Lewiston, Utah. He attended school in Lewiston and in Richmond. He completed a BA degree at Utah State in political science, with a minor in Russian and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S.

Upon graduation he was accepted into the law school at the University of Utah and received a law degree. After successfully passing the Utah Bar exam, he was hired by the law firm of Hillyard and Gunnell in Logan, Utah where he has practiced since that time, specializing in business and estate planning and pension law. The firm is now known as Hillyard, Anderson & Olsen.

He has always been interested in history and has been a member of the Mormon History Association for more than twenty years and has presented papers on Cache Valley history. He authored the pamphlet called “Logan’s Historic Main Street” that is distributed to visitors to acquaint them with the history of Logan, Utah. He also helped produce historical pieces on Logan Canyon and recently worked on a joint effort to produce the “Cache Valley Heritage Driving Tour & Map.”

Gary has shared his expertise as an attorney in many different civic capacities, including appointments to the Logan City Power Board and the Salt Palace/Fine Arts Advisory Board. He was a founding member of the Capitol Arts Alliance and the Utah Festival Opera Company and was instrumental in the renovation of the Ellen Eccles Theatre. He is presently serving as the chairman of the board of the American West Heritage Foundation located in Wellsville, Utah and on the Utah State Board of History.

David Rogers

Board Member
David L. Rogers graduated with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Sociology from Utah State University in 1963 and 1964 respectively. He completed a Ph.D. degree in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin in 1968 . He has been employed as a faculty member at the University of Colorado, Iowa State University, Colorado State University and Utah State University during his career. He is currently an Emeritus Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology at Utah State University. His teaching and research interests include community and organizational development, tourism, economic development, and electronic information applications. Beginning in 1994 he was co-principal investigator of several projects focusing on electronic information technology . These included: Rural Tourism (OURtown), Specification and Prototyping of a State Business Network, and On-going Information Systems Development and Support for the National Scenic Byways Program.
